600 athletes from five countries compete at 7th Special Olympics Singapore National Games 2009
Special Olympics (SO) Singapore hosted 600 Special Olympics athletes from Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Myanmar, and Timor Leste at the 7th Special Olympics Singapore National Games from 5 to 8 June.
Guest of Honour, His Excellency President S R Nathan, officiated at the opening ceremony which was held at Yishun Sports Stadium.
Ms Josephine Chia, Chairperson of the Games Organising Committee said: “The aim of Special Olympics is to enable people with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition. We hope to achieve this through the National Games by providing opportunities for our athletes to develop fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy with their peers, loved ones and families.”
Dr. Vivian BalaKrishnan Minister for Community, Youth and Sports was the Guest of honor at the closing ceremony.
The National Games are organised by Special Olympics Singapore, a non-profit organisation set up to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
