Special Olympics Australia declared the year 2009 as the "Year of the Coach". Its part of Special Olympics Australia”s ongoing commitment to providing quality sports to athletes with an intellectual disability
So, during 2009 Special Olympics Australia will focus on supporting and developing the skills of the many dedicated coaches that deliver the Special Olympics mission of year-round sports training and competition. The highlight of the year will be the national conference "SO, Let's Grow Together" which will be held from 1-3 May in Adelaide*. This will be a great opportunity for coaches to take part in professional development sessions as well as network and learn from the experiences of other members.

The focus on professional development will be supported by the establishment of sports-specific advisory panels. The purpose of these panels is to:
• plan and implement ways of developing each sport
• provide coaching and technical support
• establish partnerships to expand and enhance the sports experience and pathways for existing and prospective athlete.
The staff at the national office, and the growing team of state managers and community development coordinators, are really looking forward to recognising, recruiting and providing support to coaches in 2009. By doing that we can all continue to enrich the lives of people with an intellectual disability through sport, fun and community involvement.
