Special Olympics Thailand conducts Athlete Leadership Training

Special Olympics Thailand trained 36 athletes from all over Thailand to become Athlete Leaders. This was the first of its kind training session where Athletes were trained to become volunteer leaders. These athletes have already undergone Speech & Governance training under previous Athlete Leadership Programs.

The first day of the training included sessions on Games & Competitions & the role of volunteers. Ms Yee Saengsawang, Coordinator ALPs Special Olympics Asia Pacific Along with Mr. Tonsapol Tansakul Alps Coordinator Special Olympics Thailand gave a presentation on the role of Athlete Leaders as Volunteers. This generated a great response from the athletes and they showed that they were able to understand the concept of Athletes as volunteers.

The Next day of training the Athlete Leaders were allowed to practice with their mentors, whatever they had learned the previous day. Later a mock Long Jump competition was held during the course of which the Athlete Leaders became volunteers and undertook activities like Opening Ceremony, Closing ceremony and actual handling of the competitions. Athlete Leaders Escorted mock athletes to the competition venues, officiated the competitions, served water, awarded medals to the winning athletes and undertook a host of other activities. That brought an end to this interesting two day Athlete Leadership Training Session.

Special Olympics Thailand plans to conduct Athlete Leadership Trainings every year and also have appointed athletes to be a member of the Special Olympics committee in the various regions of Thailand. These Athlete Leaders will also be a part of the upcoming regional directors meeting.
